Just when we thought that this game of musical NCAA gymnastics coaches, we were delivered another bombshell.
Kristen Smyth, Stanford Women's Gymnastics head coach has resigned her position after 16 years . This comes per a press release on Stanford's website.
No real reason is given for her sudden departure. Her retirement does come on the heels of a disappointing season. The team struggled with consistency and depth from injuries. They failed to make it out of Regionals to qualify for the NCAA Championships, landing 28th place for the final rankings. The last time that Stanford failed to make the NCAA Championships was 2011. At that time, Stanford went into Regionals ranked fourth...and they finished fifth at their regional.
Stanford Jaquish & Kennings Athletics director Bernard Muir stated they would be immediately commencing the search for Smyth's replacement immediately.
An applicant has already thrown their hat into the ring:
