Things to Look Forward to in 2016: The American Cup

It's a new year and that means lots of gymnastics to look forward to.

I've decided to do a small series on things to look forward to in the coming year of gymnastics. First up, the American Cup.

USA Gymnastics is on the ball and has already announced the athletes competing at the meet in March.

The USA ladies will be represented by Maggie Nichols and Gabby Douglas.

Gabby, the 2012 Olympic All-Around Champ and 2015 All-Around World silver medalist last competed at the American Cup four years ago. While competing as an alternate, she scored higher than the official American Cup champ, Jordyn Wieber. This year, she will compete as an actual competitor, not just an alternate.

While Maggie Nichols didn't officially qualify to the all-around at the World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, her all-around total in the team final would have qualified her to the all-around final and possibly could have won the silver medal instead of Gabby. Will she usurp Gabby at the American Cup?

Representing the USA dudes, Sam Mikulak and Donnell Whittenburg.

Sam Mikulak, aka Mr. USA Gymnastics, known for good looks and winning personality.  Two-time NCAA champion and 2014 American Cup champion. Sam made the Worlds team but had to miss out due to an injury. My biggest hope is for a Sam dance cam, like they did at the 2013 Worlds.

The American Cup will be held March 5 in Newark, New Jersey at the Prudential Center. For more information, visit USA Gymnastics online.
