Japanese World Medalist, Koko Tsurumi has announced her retirement.
The 2009 World All-Around Bronze Medalist had ruptured her Achillies tendon at the NHK Cup earlier this year, according to The Gymternet.
The Gymternet also reports that Koko had been dealing with injuries that have kept her out of competition for two years. This sadly, was the "straw that broke the camel's back" as they say and Koko didn't feel as if she was making enough progress in her rehabilitation to be ready for the Rio Olympics this coming summer.
Koko scored a bronze medal in the all-around at the 2009 World Championships. She also took home a silver medal on her signature event, the uneven bars that same year, becoming the first female Japanese gymnast to medal at a World Championships in 43 years. Definitely a sad time to see her retire. Best of luck to Koko in all her future endeavors!
