Kyla Ross has ended her bid for a spot on a third world championship team and withdrawn from worlds selection camp for the world championships in Glasgow, Great Britain.
USA Gymnastics released a statement earlier today confirming Kyla's withdrawal from the selection camp, which starts Oct. 6th.
"We respect and support Kyla's decision," said Rhonda Faehn, the senior vice president for women's gymnastics with USA Gymnastics. "Kyla continues to be a tremendous asset to the U.S. Women’s National Team and her dedication, talent and accomplishments have contributed to the USA’s success on the international stage.”
Kyla has been a stalwart on the US team since she won her first junior national title in 2009. Since then, she has been a consistent, reliable performer for team USA, helping team USA to Olympic Gold in London. Unlike her fellow Fierce Five teammates, Kyla has not taken a break from training or competing since the Olympics. She helped team USA bring home a world championship gold medal almost one-year ago in Nanning, China. Individually, she helped herself to an all-around silver, and silvers for bars and beam at the 2013 Worlds in Antwerp, Belgium. She also scooped up an all-around bronze medal in Nanning.
This past year, the usually consistent and reliable Kyla has struggled with consistency, showing less than stellar performances at the Secret Classic and P&G Championships, where she struggled to hit newly upgraded routines. In her personal life, Kyla recently graduated from high school and is taking a year off before college to focus on gymnastics. Perhaps before she makes her attempt for a second Olympic team, she takes some time to focus on herself and takes a well deserved break.
The World Championships will be held in Glasgow, Great Britain, Oct 23 - Nov.1. USA Gymnastics confirmed the team selection camp will be held next Tuesday, Oct. 6 - Oct. 8th, with the team being announced on the evening of the 8th.
