Favorite Routines: Nastia Liukin, Uneven Bars

For this edition of Favorite Routines, we're re-visiting the women's uneven bars final of the 2008 Olympic Games. I'm featuring Nastia Liukin's gold/silver medal winning routine. I say "gold/silver" because she was awarded the silver in a tie breaker for the gold medal.

This was a simple time, before Nastia Liukin's hair started living up to the phrase "everything's bigger in Texas." (I couldn't help myself, I'm sorry.) At the 2008 Olympics, Nastia usurped teammate Shawn Johnson for the all-around gold, carrying on her family tradition of winning gold medals. Dear Dad, Valeri was an Olympic Gold Medalist back in 1988 in Seoul. It's only appropriate that 20 years later, his daughter would win the coveted gold. In addition, Nastia qualified to the bars, beam and floor finals.

The uneven bars were undoubtedly Nastia's strength and she was favored to win the gold. She did get gold, technically. Chinese gymnast He Kexin tied Nastia's 16.725. The gold was awarded to Kexin after a tie breaker.

Elise Ray Officially Named Washington Head Coach

Elise Ray, 2000 Olympic Bronze Medalist, US National Champion, NCAA champion, has been named the head coach at the University of Washington's gymnastics program, following the retirement of longtime head coach, Joanne Bowers.

Kyla Ross Out of Worlds Selection

Kyla Ross has ended her bid for a spot on a third world championship team and withdrawn from worlds selection camp for the world championships in Glasgow, Great Britain. USA Gymnastics released a statement earlier today confirming Kyla's withdrawal from the selection camp, which starts Oct. 6th.
